Fear of Failure and the Honeymoon Phase

The problem that occurs most often with business owners who try to jump onto the moving train of social media is that they let fear prevent the leap or from sticking it out past the learning curve.  Fear is THE factor, not just A factor.  Social media requires a new vocabulary, learning some new tools and a couple tricks along the way but ultimately it’s nothing new to business, just another method.  The function is there but the forms are changing.  Fear often prevents business owners from starting a social networking strategy simply because they don’t know what to do and are too intimidated or fearful to learn.  Others start boldly with good intentions but then fizzle out after a big bang in the beginning.  I’m not saying there’s not a learning curve, there is!  But the payoff comes when you push past the fear factor and get started and then push past it again when the excitement wears off and you are feeling like it’s not effective.  The cycle of new business leaders joining social media goes something like this:

FEAR  —- DECIDE TO DO IT—-GET STARTED—- HONEYMOON PHASE—-STRUGGLE—-FIZZLE OUT

Now what it should look like is something like this:

FEAR  —- DECIDE TO DO IT—- GET STARTED —- HONEYMOON PHASE —- STRUGGLE —– PUSH AHEAD —-ASK FOR HELP—- SUCCEED!
